Good news woke the people of Looc, Misamis Oriental yesterday, April 19, as their bet for this year’s Palarong Pambansa, Erwin Mancao, finished first in the 5,000-meter run secondary.
After his success in the Mindanao Leg of the 21st Milo Little Olympics last year, Mancao has added yet another accolade under his belt. Beating his personal record (he clocked in a record of 16:01.60), he couldn’t help but become emotional as he gasped for breath on the finish line of Quirino Stadium’s oval track.
But, during an interview with Mancao—who represents Villanueva National High School—it turns out that there was a deeper story behind his tears. Apparently, he was aiming for the P20,000 incentive in hopes that he could afford a home for his parents.
“Kasambahay po ang Nanay ko at sa niogan naman ang tatay ko. Yung incentive ko po dito gagamitin namin upang ipagawa ang bahay namin.”
In a report from PTV Ylocos, the said incentive would come from the Office of Department of Education (DepEd) Region 10.
Meanwhile, thousands of netizens who were moved by Mancao’s story celebrated his success on social media. Take a look at what they had to say below:
Congratulations, Erwin Mancao!
