Filipinos everywhere laughed at the funny sight of local authorities falling in the water because of the wooden bridge that collapsed in Barangay Rio Hondo, Zamboanga City. But things quickly become serious when we found out that the cost of this flimsy bridge amounted to PHP 12 million. Rep. Alfredo Benitez revealed the surprising news at a forum conducted in Quezon City.
The National Housing Authority was responsible for funding the wooden bridge which has been rehabilitated after the embarrassing and dangerous event. As we all know, clever and agitated netizens created hilarious memes about the fall; they even voiced out their lack of sympathy towards these local government officials.

Most of the comments stated that it was an appropriate consequence for allegedly stealing the project’s funds. While these claims haven’t been confirmed, it does make you think about the fact that a supposedly expensive structure easily collapsed when it shouldn’t have.
Benitez also said that the housing units which were built on stilts amounted to PHP220,000 per unit, only PHP 20,000 less than houses that were constructed with concrete on dry land. But, the materials used on the houses are the same as was found in the wooden bridge which means that they can also be swept away by strong waves or destroyed by too much weight.

His committee will immediately conduct an investigation regarding these anomalies once Congress resumes. Benitez will be calling representatives from the NHA and the DPWH to talk about what happened.
