Some of us might think celebrities have no luck when it comes to marriage. We have the likes of Meryll Soriano, Ruffa Gutierrez, and Edu Manzano who unfortunately ended their marriages. It’s a good thing that we also have celebrity couples, like Glydel Mercado and Tonton Gutierrez, who show us that it’s possible to have a long, happy marriage.
“Celebrity Bluff,” a local game show, featured local celebrity couples as players in their recent episode. Among them is “The Stepdaughters” star Glydel Mercado and her handsome husband of 20 years, actor Tonton Gutierrez. Aside from having two lovely daughters, the pair is also blessed with a simple, pleasant life.
The show’s host can’t help but ask the couple to share their “secret” to happiness and the two obliged. Tonton shared that having simple wants and needs really helped their marriage. While for his wife, it’s about taking small arguments and talking about it before it becomes a big deal.
In an interview with PEP back in 2009, Tonton shared the exact same advice. He said:
“Kung kuntento ka sa mga bagay na mayroon ka, pag ini-apply mo ‘yan sa buong buhay mo, that will be the secret behind it. Hindi lang dahil nag-asawa ka na at saka ka makukuntento. Sa umpisa pa lang, kapag alam mong makuntento, magiging maayos ang lahat ng papasukan mo.”

For him, some marriages fail because they don’t learn how to be content with what they have. There’s no such thing as a perfect person and your partner will always have flaws.
“Kung marunong kang makuntento, it follows na yun. Wala namang perfect marriage, e. Basta, kung ano yung imperfections ng isang tao, basta mahal mo siya, matatanggap mo yun.”
