With all the terrible news surrounding mental illness these days — from the passing of famous personalities — it’s just fitting to go back to a more inspiring story when a hairstylist turned down a depressed teen who wanted to cut all her hair off.
Almost a year ago, it was just an ordinary day for then Iowa student-hairdresser Kayley Olsson until a 16-year-old girl walked in the Capri Waterloo salon where she’s working at. The teen wanted all of her hair shaved off. According to Kayley, the girl had been suffering from depression for a couple of years. Because of this, she has lost the strength to take care of herself. Even brushing her own hair proved to be difficult.
“She felt so down and so worthless she couldn’t even brush her hair, she only got up to use the restroom.”

But because she had a school photograph scheduled, the poor girl knew she had to fix her hair. Not wanting to deal with the pain of combing it out, she asked for all of it to be cut off by the hairstylist. But Kayley couldn’t possibly bear to see her lose all of her hair. She wanted to make her feel better. So instead of taking the easy route, she opted to fix the girl’s hair.
Needless to say, it wasn’t easy. It took her a total of 13 hours over two days to complete the task. But alas, she transformed her hair. The then tangled and seemingly hopeless hair of the 16-year-old was morphed into an ombre wavy bob.

Kayley posted the amazing transformation of Facebook. At the end of her post she said:
“I want this to be a lesson to people. MENTAL HEALTH is a thing, it effects people all around the world and of all ages! PARENTS take it serious don’t just push your kids off and tell them to get over something they legitimately can’t. A CHILD should NEVER feel so worthless to not even want to brush their hair.”
Many praised Kayley, the hairstylist, for her kind deed. Read some of their comments below.
