It is a common notion among Filipinos that once a person works abroad, he or she is already affluent. In truth, there are a lot of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) who are struggling financially in foreign countries. Some of them opt to do sideline jobs just to have additional income. As a matter of fact, some juggle two to three jobs just to have enough money to send to their families here in the Philippines. This is a sad reality that is unfamiliar to many of our “kababayans”.
Recently, a heartbreaking story of an OFW surfaced online. Based on the viral post of Facebook page Rhaz Vlog, a Filipina in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq sells “suman” and “malagkit” outside a fast food restaurant amidst the strong sandstorm in the area. According to the netizen, the “kakanin” vendor opted to sell Filipino native delicacies in Iraq to gain additional income.
